Holding on to Hope: Suicide Prevention Week

9/9/2026

National Suicide Prevention Week, observed September 6–12, reminds us that compassionate care, meaningful connections and honest conversations can save lives. At Low Country Health Care System, our behavioral health providers help patients recognize their value and find hope during difficult moments.

Holding hope for others

For Marsha Wren Carroll, PMHNP-BC, FNP-BC, Suicide Prevention Week carries both personal and professional meaning. “Suicide Prevention Week isn’t just an administrative observance on the calendar. It is a deeply personal reminder of the quiet victories, the heavy losses and the profound responsibility of holding hope for people who have completely lost their own.”

Wren chose behavioral health after seeing how closely mental and physical wellness are connected while working as a family nurse practitioner. “An individual’s mental state, emotions and daily habits directly shape their overall physical health, relationships and quality of life.”

Her approach focuses on caring for the whole person by supporting the mind, body and spirit.

Helping patients recognize their value

Kiara Jenkins is committed to helping individuals understand that their lives matter. “Suicide prevention means helping individuals recognize their value, understand why their lives matter and find hope during some of their most difficult moments.” She finds purpose in providing compassionate care and helping patients feel heard. Kiara is especially passionate about substance use treatment, Medication-Assisted Treatment and psychotherapy. “I value the opportunity to support individuals through recovery, provide compassionate care without judgment and help patients develop healthier coping skills.”

You are not alone

Supporting suicide prevention begins with listening, speaking openly about mental health and treating others with compassion. Asking for help is a courageous first step toward healing.

If you or someone you know is experiencing emotional distress or thoughts of suicide, call or text 988 or visit 988lifeline.org to connect with a trained crisis counselor. Support is free, confidential and available 24/7. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.
